Today, Wuxi Rihuan Sensor Technology Co., Ltd. will introduce to you magnetic switchesand proximity switches: They may seem similar, but in fact they are different.

In industrial settings, magnetic switches and proximity switches may have similar appearances, but their working principles and applicable scenarios are completely different. Correctly distinguishing between the two is the first step in accurate selection.

1. Different detection objects

Magnetic switch: It detects magnetic fields and can only function when a magnetic object is present. The most common application scenario is an air cylinder - the piston of the air cylinder is equipped with a magnetic ring, and the magnetic switch is fixed on the outer wall of the cylinder barrel, sensing the position of the magnetic ring inside the piston. Without the magnetic ring, the magnetic switch cannot detect any object.

Proximity switch: There are two types: inductive and capacitive. The inductive proximity switch detects metallic conductors; the capacitive proximity switch detects any object with a change in dielectric constant (including metals, non-metals, liquids, etc.). Proximity switches do not rely on magnetic fields and have a wider application range.

2. Different installation methods

Magnetic switch: It is usually fixed on the outer wall of the cylinder barrel using straps or slots, without the need to make holes on the equipment. The installation is convenient and the position can be adjusted along the cylinder barrel.

Proximity switch: It needs to be installed on a dedicated bracket, with the sensing surface facing the target object to be measured. During installation, a certain detection distance and alignment accuracy must be ensured. Usually, an installation position needs to be reserved on the equipment.

3. Different Typical Application Scenarios

Magnetic switch: Specifically for cylinders. It is used to determine whether the piston of the cylinder has reached its position or has returned to its original position. It is a common travel feedback component in pneumatic systems.

Proximity switch: General detection. It can be used for metal position detection, part presence/absence determination, position limit of rotating components, counting, etc. It is widely applicable to various automated equipment.

One piece of advice: To detect the position of the piston on the cylinder, choose a magnetic switch; for other situations where you need to detect the presence of metals or objects, choose a proximity switch. Never attach the proximity switch to the outer wall of the cylinder - without a magnetic ring, it cannot sense.
