Proximity switches are commonly used detection components in industrial automation. The correctness of wiring directly affects the operation of the equipment. They are mainly divided into two-wire and three-wire systems. The three-wire system further includes NPN and PNP types. The differences in wiring methods for these different types are significant. The key points can be remembered by the mnemonic: brown for positive, blue for negative, and black for output. The specific wiring methods are as follows: 

  1. Two-wire proximity switch: The wiring method is simple. Just connect the proximity switch in series with the load and then plug it into the power supply. There is no need to distinguish between the signal wire and the power wire. 

  2. Three-wire NPN type proximity switch: The brown wire is connected to the positive terminal of the power supply and also to the load terminal; the black wire is the signal line and is connected to the other end of the load; the blue wire is connected to the negative terminal of the power supply. 

  3. Three-wire PNP type proximity switch: The brown wire is connected to the positive terminal of the power supply; the black wire is the signal line, connected to the load end; the blue wire is connected to the negative terminal of the power supply and also connected to the other end of the load. 

  4. PLC module matching principle: When connecting PLC digital input modules, the switch type must be matched. For the common input terminals that are the negative pole of the power supply and the module with current flowing out, choose NPN type; for the common input terminals that are the positive pole of the power supply and the module with current flowing in, choose PNP type. 

  5. Load adaptation range: The load for proximity switches can be selected from signal lights, relay coils or PLC digital input modules, and they can be combined as needed.
