Today, Wuxi Rihuan Sensing Technology Co., Ltd. will introduce to us safety light curtains and safety relays: how to jointly build reliable protection.

In industrial safety protection systems, the safety light curtain and the safety relay each play different but complementary roles. The light curtain is responsible for detecting the intrusion of personnel into dangerous areas, while the relay is responsible for processing signals and shutting down the equipment. For a complete and reliable safety link to be formed, the two must work correctly together; otherwise, it may lead to signal delays, equipment shutdown failures, and ultimately endanger the safety of the operators.

1. Clear division of responsibilities: Each task is handled by the appropriate party.

Safety light curtain: A protective area is formed by an infrared light beam array. When a person or limb enters this area, the light curtain immediately detects that the light beam is blocked and outputs a safety cut-off signal.

Safety Relay: As the core control component of the safety circuit, it receives signals from the light curtain and immediately cuts off the power supply of the equipment, causing the equipment to stop urgently. At the same time, it can output an alarm signal.

Unlike ordinary relays, the safety relays employ redundant circuits and mandatory directional contact structures within their components. Even if a single component fails, they can still reliably cut off the output, preventing the loss of protection due to the failure of the circuit.

II. Three key points for coordinated use

Selection matching

The rated current and voltage of the safety relay must be compatible with the output capacity of the safety curtain and the power circuit of the equipment. An excessively large load may cause the contacts to stick or burn out, while an excessively small load may result in the signal not being able to be normally driven.

Connection Specifications

Connect the output signal lines of the photoelectric curtain to the input terminals of the safety relay, as well as the lines from the relay to the equipment control circuit in strict accordance with the product manual. Pay attention to details such as signal polarity (NPN/PNP) correspondence, shielding grounding, etc., to avoid incorrect connections, open circuits, or short circuits.

Regular testing

During daily maintenance, it is necessary to simultaneously check the beam sensitivity of the photoelectric curtain (which can be verified through blocking tests) and the circuit status of the safety relay (such as indicator lights and self-check functions). Any abnormalities should be promptly investigated to ensure that both functions operate normally in coordination.

III. Extended Function: Rational Application of Delayed Shutdown

Some safety relays support the setting of delayed shutdown. In certain production scenarios (such as large inertial equipment or continuous processing lines), an appropriate delay can allow safety actions to be completed before personnel enter the dangerous area (such as stopping after completing the current operation), balancing safety protection and production rhythm. However, it should be noted that the delay time must be strictly determined according to risk assessment and cannot be arbitrarily extended.

Summary

The safety curtain and the safety relay form a pair of "detection-execution" partners. Only when the models are matched, the wiring is correct, regular maintenance is conducted, and the delay function is reasonably configured based on risks, can a truly reliable safety protection system be established.
